Scientific
Based on 60 years of Personality Research
The assessment methodologies are based on over 60 years of accredited personality research. Five testing strategies are employed for reliable personality analysis.
Your Guides represents the peak result of over 60 years of research by world-renowned personality experts. The theories of Abraham Maslow, Raymond Catell, Alfred Adler, Carl Jung, Erik Erikson, and Jean Piaget were reviewed and integrated into a 5-fold personality assessment system.
Overview of Personality Net's scientific background:
Developmental Psychology
As we grow older, we pass through different life phases. Within each phase, our goals and main motivations change. We shift our emphasis on external vs. internal validation of self-worth, intimacy vs. independence, generativity vs. stagnation, and the maturation and solidification of key attitudes and values.
To illuminate which goals and values currently guide you, Personality Net integrates a motivation-assessment based on Erik Erikson's socio-emotional development theories, Lawrence Kohlberg's research on motivational values, and Abraham Maslow's findings on drive states.
Temperament Theory
We are each born with a characteristic mood range and activity level. Results of the New York Longitudinal study (Alexander Thomas, Stella Chess & Herbert Birch) show that there are at least 6 major temperament traits that become apparent starting at birth and tend to remain stable across the lifespan. These include: overall activity level, rhythmicity, withdrawal, adaptability, intensity of reaction, and mood quality. One entire chapter of your Guide deals with temperament findings and how they apply specifically to you.
Gender Role Theory
Starting in childhood individuals develop a set of expectations about what activities are appropriate for males and what activities are appropriate for females. These expectations are built into a cognitive map that guides our behavior and emotional reactions within a relationship. In Personality Net, a gender role assessment is integrated based upon the work of Jean Piaget and findings associated with the Sex Role Inventory.
Trait Theory
The assessment of your personality follows a trait theory approach based upon the findings of Raymond Cattell, Hans Eysenck, and Gordon Allport. In addition, Carl Jung's theories on personality type are also used as a foundation for the assessment of your specific thinking mode tendencies. Your personality is described in terms of a Five-factor model of personality development.
Impression Formation
The impression we get of other individuals is heavily influenced by the impression we have of ourselves. Albert Bandura's theories on Self Efficacy and Julian Rotter's findings on Locus of Control are incorporated in the personality test in order to assess the impression variables that guide your perception of the world.
Relationship Expectations
Research results from the Triangular Theory of Love and Carl Roger's research on self/relationship expectations are incorporated as an important basis for understanding your current relationship needs and the relationship needs of your significant others.
Certified
University Survey with over 20,000 participants
The assessment methodologies were developed and certified by University Researchers and Personality Experts. In 2003 a large scale University Survey was conducted among 21,074 participants to validate the analysis.
In May 2003 researchers from the University of Vienna conducted a large-scale study on the effectiveness of Personality Net's assessment technology, as well as the predictive validity of the 32 dimensions of personality for assessing the personality compatibility of couples.
Over 21,074 individuals participated in the study. Participants reported overall high satisfaction ratings with the assessment of their personality in each of the 8 dimensions of assessment. Predictive validity was established through the cross-mapping of personality and self-reported interests, activities, values and hobbies. In addition, correlation analysis of the personalities of couples revealed that personality compatibility scores correlated strongly with interpersonal relationship success on the long term, especially in the areas of interpersonal trust, honesty, and communication.
